The School of Physics has four undergraduate majors: Electronic Information Science and Technology, Applied Physics, Physics, and Strengthening Foundation Plan Physics. The enrollment is carried out as physics major, and the "1+3" scheme cultivation is implemented (students will have the same curriculum in the first academic year and start the second academic year with chosen major. The strengthening foundation plan training program will be formulated separately).

Strengthening foundation plan physics

Chongqing University Strengthening Foundation Program Physics adopts the "3+1+2" (undergraduate-master) and "3+1+4" (undergraduate-doctoral) cultivation scheme. "3" means that the first three academic years are mainly based on physics courses; "1" means that students in the fourth year will study in different fields according to their own interests and expertise and complete the bridging courses of undergraduate and master or doctoral, "2" and "4" refers to the master or doctoral level when students carry out scientific research work in their original major or they can be diverted to majors of high-end chips and software, intelligent technology, new materials, advanced manufacturing, national security, etc. This major focuses on key national areas, highlights the supporting and leading role of basic disciplines, selects a group of ambitious, interested, and talented young students for special training, and sends reserve talents to major national strategic fields.

Physics

The physics major can confer a doctorate degree in physics as a first-level discipline and has a center for post-doctoral studies. Based on the doctoral program of physics as a first-level discipline and the first-level key discipline of physics in Chongqing, as well as the fruitful research in theoretical physics, condensed matter physics, atomic and molecular physics, this major involves particle physics, general relativity and gravitational field theory, astrophysics and condensed matter, quantum optics and quantum information and offers related courses. This major requests that students can systematically master the basic theories of physics and related knowledge for application and focus on cultivating students' hands-on ability and innovative thinking ability through practical training. The academic supervisor scheme aims for research methods training, which guides students to understand and participate in cutting-edge scientific research, so as to cultivate their scientific research capabilities and teamwork spirit. The physics major aims to cultivate basic research talents with solid foundation in physics theory and experimental skills, good mathematical foundation and consciousness of innovation, a scientific way of thinking and excellent comprehensive qualities, and the ability to propose, analyze and solve practical problems, and who follow the development of modern physics,  pursue further studies in physics and related fields or become physics teachers in colleges and universities and the main force of basic physics research in scientific research institutes.

Applied Physics

Applied Physics is an advantageous special major of Chongqing, aiming to cultivate talents in application of physics-related fields. This major bases on the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of University Physics Experiments and the University Key Laboratory of Materials Physics in Chongqing, as well as research platforms such as soft matter, condensed matter, environmental physics, environmental radiation detection, etc., and focuses on the development of functional materials and devices and optical information science and technology. On the one hand, this major consolidates basic knowledge of physics and offers basic physics courses such as the four major mechanics. On the other hand, it focuses on applied physics knowledge to solve practical problems in the fields of physics and its interdisciplinary research and production. Its curriculum includes a large number of professional technical courses, such as: modern detection technology, information optics, laser and information processing experiments, optoelectronic technology, semiconductor device physics, quantum transport foundation, material preparation and testing, vacuum and thin film technology, magnetic functional materials, etc. Graduates can not only continue their study in physics and related fields but can also apply the professional technical knowledge they have learned for employment in new materials technology, electronic information technology, modern optoelectronic technology and other related emerging industries.

Electronic Information Science and Technology

The electronic information science and technology major was established in 2001. So far, this major has fruitful results in student cultivation, scientific research, researcher enrollment, and laboratory construction. In recent years, taking the opportunity of recruting young talents in related fields, we have cultivated some excellent teachers with profound theoretical foundations in electronic information science. Based on the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of University Physics Experiment, Electronic Information Professional Laboratory, University Key Laboratory of Materials Physics in Chongqing, Soft Matter Science Laboratory, etc., it has laid a solid foundation for the training of professional talents. This major aims to cultivate high-qualified theoretical and technical talent with comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, and physical, a solid foundation in mathematics and physics, good scientific thinking, scientific experiments and preliminary scientific research training, a systematic grasp of modern electronic technology, signal and information processing, optoelectronic technology, and semiconductor physics, microelectronics, computer application and control, sensing and detection, and various experimental testing skills. Graduate students are mainly engaged in product design and manufacturing, application technology development, basic performance research and production technology management in related fields such as signal and information processing, electronic information systems, microelectronics, optoelectronics, semiconductor devices, and micro-nano technology. Graduates can also continue their study in physics and related fields.
